
The experts committee, constituted by the Union Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee to work out innovative funding techniques through public private partnership (PPP) for rail infrastructure projects has set out tough timelines schedules for their completion.
According to railway sources, the committee spearheaded by FICCI secretary general Amit Mitra, has recommended the setting up of diesel and electric locomotive factories, coach manufacturing units, freight terminals, multi modal logistics parks, multi-functional complexes and world class stations by attracting private investment. The committee has decided that 64 multi-functional complexes (MCFs) be delivered across the country. Of these, construction of 12 MCFs at Mysore, Indore, Madurai, Hardwar, Bardhman and Udaipur among others would be taken up in the first phase of the project. The committee report has been prepared for the optimum utilization of railway resources and infrastructure development. Not only has the Mitra panel set a deadlines for all important projects, the deadlines also aim at implementing most of these before the 2011.
